BLAINE, Minn. (11/30/07) -- Sandra Felten (JR, Cashton, Wis.) recorded a hat trick and added two assists, while Julien Olson (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) had a four-point night with two goals and two assists, leading Bethel University to a 6-2 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Friday night at the Schwan Super Rink.
Bethel (3-2-1 overall, 2-1-0 MIAC) outshot Augsburg (0-7-0 overall, 0-3-0 MIAC) by a 45-35 margin. Augsburg goalie Toni Menth (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) recorded her fifth 30-plus-save performance of the season with 39 saves. Beth Spurrier (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) had 33 saves for the win for the Royals.
Erin Leyden (FY, Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South HS) and Tiffany Magnuson (JR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) scored goals for the Auggies; Leyden's tally on an assist from Kaitlan Dickson (FY, Bemidji, Minn.) at the 7:32 mark of the first period, and Magnuson's on a shorthanded, unassisted goal at the 3:30 mark of the third period.
Olson opened the scoring with a goal at the 5:50 mark from Felton and Bethany Murphy-Aultman (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.), but Augsburg tied the game at 1-1 with Leyden's goal. The Royals scored the next three tallies, with Felten scoring twice, on an even-strength goal from Olson and Murphy at the 11:51 mark of the first period, and on a power-play goal from Whitney Ischi (FY, Kenai, Alaska) at the 3:02 mark of the second period. Olson put in her second goal of the game at the 6:55 mark, from Felten.
Magnuson scored her shorthanded goal early in the third period, but Bethel scored twice to cap the scoring. Miriam Paas (JR, Toronto, Ontario) scored from Olson and Amy Beitzel (SR, Apple Valley, Minn.) at the 9:56 mark, and Felten completed her hat trick with a goal from Misty Pirus (FY, Elmhurst, Ill.) at the 18:45 mark.
Magnuson and Jackie Keller * (SR, Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) had seven shots apiece for the Auggies, wtih Katie Medd (SR, Mankato, Minn./East HS) adding five shots. Felten had nine shots for the Royals, with Olson adding eight shots.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (12/1) at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
