MINNEAPOLIS (12/1/07) -- Shannon Renne (FY, Nicollet, Minn.) scored 17 points, hitting three 3-pointers, while Katie LaGrave * (SR, Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS) scored 10 points with five rebounds, three assists and three steals, as Augsburg College rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to claim a 57-54 victory over visiting Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Kristina Lurken * (SR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) scored six of Augsburg's last eight points in the game, en route to a nine-point, eight-rebound, six-assist, three-steal effort for Augsburg (3-2 overall, 1-1 MIAC). Christa Suedbeck (JR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) had a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with six points, two steals and two blocked shots.
Gustavus (1-1 overall, 1-1 MIAC) was led by Jess Vadnais (SR, Hudson, Wis.), who had 19 points. Brittany Holm (FY, Benson, Minn.) came off the bench to score 10 points, and Julia Schultz (SO, Marshall, Minn.) had seven points with eight assists and three steals.
Gustavus led 34-27 at halftime, and a 13-5 run over the first 5:11 of the second half gave the Gusties their biggest lead of the game at 15 points, 47-32 with 14:49 remaining. But Augsburg cut into the lead, eventually trimming it to 52-51 with 3:37 left on a steal and layup by Lurken.
Vicky Peterson (SR, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) scored on a jumper on the Gusties' next possession, but Augsburg scored the final six points to take the victory on two free throws by Renee with 1:03 left, a jumper by Lurken with 46 seconds left, and two free throws by Lurken with three seconds left. Gustavus missed three field goals and two free throws, and had three turnovers in its final eight possessions over the final three minutes of play.
Keyed by the 14-rebound effort by Suedbeck, Augsburg outrebounded Gustavus by a 41-32 margin. Augsburg also scored 21 points off of 22 Gustavus turnovers, while the Gusties scored just 11 points off of 25 Augsburg turnovers.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Monday (12/3) at 7:30 p.m., as Augsburg hosts St. Catherine and Gustavus plays at Bethel.
