MINNEAPOLIS (12/7/07) -- Nick Pernula (SR, Osseo, Minn.) scored two goals as part of a four-goal third period, adding an assist for a three-point night, as his University of St. Thomas men's hockey team pulled away for a 6-1 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg (0-8-1 overall, 0-5-0 MIAC) had cut the lead to 2-1 after two periods on a power-play goal by Cory Ellertson (FY, Albert Lea, Minn.), assisted by Dan Carlson (SR, Roseville, Minn.) and Jim Jensen (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS).
Alex Arnason (SO, Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) added a goal and an assist for the Tommies (8-1-1 overall, 3-0-0 MIAC), who extended their unbeaten streak to seven straight games.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (12/8) at 7 p.m. at the UST/STA Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn.
The Tommies pulled away in the third period, scoring four goals in a 5:50 span. Pernula scored twice and Arnason scored once, along with an unassisted, shorthanded goal by Sean Bryant (JR, Sartell, Minn.).
Alex Coles (SO, Apple Valley, Minn.) opened the scoring at the 6:04 mark of the first period, followed by a goal from Andrew Panchenko (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS) at the 15:34 mark of the second period.
Augsburg was outshot by a 29-20 margin in the game. Augsburg had nine power-play opportunities in the game, but could only convert one. Meanwhile, the Tommies were 1-for-4 on their power plays.
Tyler Chestnut (SO, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) collected 19 saves in goal for the Tommies, while Adam Hendel (JR, Bay City, Wis./Red Wing (Minn.) HS) had 23 saves for the Auggies.
Dan Leopold (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS), Ben Roberts (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) and Chris Johnson (SO, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) had three shots on goal apiece for the Auggies.
