Women's Basketball 2/10/07 -- St. Mary's 58, Augsburg 45

MINNEAPOLIS (2/10/07) -- Kelly Tanke (Jr. La Crosse, Wis./Logan HS) led all players with 17 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and Jessica Weisbrod (Jr., Rollingstone, Minn./Winona Cotter HS) had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, as St. Mary's University pulled away in the second half to claim a 58-45 win over Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball contest Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Si Melby Hall.

Danielle Dehning (So., Spring Grove, Minn.) scored 12 points with nine rebounds, and Nichole Hanson (So., Owatonna, Minn.) scored eight points with seven assists and four steals for the Cardinals, who improved to 7-16 overall, 5-15 in MIAC play.

Augsburg (1-22 overall, 1-19 MIAC) was led by Katie LaGrave * (Jr., Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS), who scored 12 points with five rebounds and two assists. Kristina Lurken * (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) scored 11 points and had nine rebounds.

Michelle Richter (So., Chaska, Minn.) scored eight points with four rebounds and two assists for the Auggies, and Brietta Schluender (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored seven points with six rebounds.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team leading by more than six points. Augsburg led 27-26 at halftime, paced by Lurken's nine points and six rebounds.

Two second-half scoring runs sealed the game for the Cardinals. A 12-2 run gave the Cardinals a 44-34 lead with 11:57 left to play, with Tanke scoring eight points in the run. After Augsburg cut the lead to four points at 46-42 with 7:56 left, the Cardinals again pulled away, outscoring the Auggies by a 12-3 margin the rest of the way.

Tanke scored 14 of her 17 points in the second half for the Cardinals.

St. Mary's outrebounded Augsburg by a 49-35 margin in the game, including 21 offensive rebounds, which the Cardinals converted into 14 second-chance points.

Both teams return to MIAC play on Wednesday (2/14) at 7:45 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Concordia-Moorhead and St. Mary's playing at Bethel
