STORY FROM CONCORDIA-MOORHEAD SPORTS INFORMATION

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/17/07) -- The word of the day for the Concordia College-Moorhead women's hockey team was "split".

Concordia scored four unanswered goals in the second and third periods to come back from a 1-0 deficit and beat Augsburg College 4-1 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action on Saturday at the Moorhead Sports Center. The win helps Concordia salvage a series split with the Auggies and keep intact their streak of conference series splits. The Cobbers have now split their last four MIAC series.

Concordia (7-11-2 overall, 6-9-1 MIAC) received goals from four different players to earn the victory. The Cobbers fell in a 1-0 hole in the first period after Augsburg's (8-11-4 overall, 5-8-3 MIAC) scoring sensation, Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS), scored a power play goal at 6:45 on an assist from Jess Olson (Fr., Hamel, Minn./Wayzata HS).

Magnuson recorded her 20th goal of the season, giving her 41 in her career, already third-most in school history, behind the 68 of Angie Rieger (1997-2001) and 55 of Lauren Chezick (2001-05). Her 20 goals this season is sixth-most in a single-season in school history; the record is 27 goals, set by Rieger in the 1999-2000 season.

Concordia then erupted for four unanswered goals in the second and third periods. The Cobber scoring barrage started midway through the second period when Paige Stone scored her sixth goal of the season on the power play at 10:45. Kelsey Puffe and Brandi Dunn were credited with the assists. The teams then went scoreless until the final period of play.

With the game deadlocked at 1-1, Concordia sophomore defenseman Ceara Bergsrud scored the eventual game-winning goal just 1:25 into the final frame. The 2-1 lead would hold up until the final 10 minutes of play, when Erin Johnson scored an even-strength goal at the 13:09 mark. For Johnson, it was her second goal of the series. Alyssa Dahl notched her second straight assist on Johnson's goal.

The final tally of the game came less than one minute later, when Kayla Thorson broke out of her scoring drought to record her seventh goal of the year. Thorson opened the season by scoring a goal in each of Concordia's first four games of the year. She then went scoreless for the next 16 games before breaking the streak at the 14:08 mark against the Auggies.

Concordia held a 32-26 edge over Augsburg in shots on goal. Cobber goalie Maddie Haroldson played the entire game and made 25 saves to pick up her fifth win of the season. Auggie goalie Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) turned aside 28 shots in the losing effort.

Both teams scored one power play goal. CC went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Augsburg was 1-for-4 on the man-advantage situations.

Concordia will finish off the regular season by playing at St. Benedict on Feb. 23-24. Both games will be played at the St. Cloud Municipal Athletic Complex.

Augsburg closes the regular season with a two-game series against Hamline. Friday's (2/23) game is at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, while Saturday's (2/24) game is at 7:15 p.m. at the Drake Ice Arena in St. Paul.
