MINNEAPOLIS (2/3/07) -- Erin Baldwin (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) claimed a three-goal hat trick and added an assist for a four-point night, and Stephanie Kendrick (So., Osceola, Wis.) scored the game-tying goal with two seconds left in regulation time, as the College of St. Benedict claimed a 5-5, overtime tie with host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey contest Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Sarah Horlitz (Sr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) had two assists for the Blazers, who moved to 1-13-3 overall, 1-7-4 in MIAC play with the tie.
Five different players scored goals for Augsburg, now 7-8-4 overall, 4-5-3 in MIAC play. After starting the season winless in its first nine games (0-6-3) in November and December, Augsburg is now 7-2-1 in its last 10 games. The tie broke a four-game winning streak for the Auggies.
St. Benedict took a two-goal lead in the first 5:35 of the game, on Baldwin's first goal of the game at the 16-second mark and on a power-play goal by Ashley Davenport (Jr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS).
Augsburg followed with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead after two periods.
Whitney Restemayer (Fr., Bemidji, Minn.) scored an unassisted goal at the 10:11 mark of the first frame, followed at the 17:18 mark by an unassisted, power-play goal by
Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame HS), her team-high 18th goal of the season.
Katie Medd (Jr., Mankato, Minn./East HS) followed with a goal at the 5:28 mark of the second period, assisted by
Andrea Toft (Fr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS).
Baldwin scored twice in the first 5:45 of the third period, including a power-play tally, to give the Blazers a 4-3 lead. But Augsburg took the lead back, as
Jess Olson (Fr., Hamel, Minn./Wayzata HS) scored from
Christina Waller * (So., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) on the power play at the 14:23 mark, and
Sara Toft (Fr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored an unassisted goal at the 18:51 mark.
But after the Blazers pulled goalie Sarah Zweber (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) for an extra skater in the final minute, Kendrick found the net on a rebound for the game-tying goal at the 19:58 mark, assisted by Maggie Kinney (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) and Baldwin.
St. Benedict outshot Augsburg by a 35-33 margin.
Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) collected 30 saves for Augsburg, while Zweber had 28 saves for the Blazers.
Both teams are in action in MIAC series next weekend, as Augsburg faces Gustavus, while St. Benedict faces St. Catherine.
