MINNEAPOLIS (9/12/07) -- Jennifer Thelemann (Sr., Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson HS) led all players with 21 kills to go along with 13 digs and three blocks (one solo), leading Gustavus Adolphus College to a victory in five games over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match on Wednesday night at Si Melby Hall.
Andrea Kron (Sr., Cold Spring, Minn./ROCORI HS) added 20 kills and six digs for the Gusties (7-2 overall, 1-0 MIAC), who won by scores of 29-31, 30-13, 30-25, 28-30, 15-12.
Kristina Lurken (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) had 14 kills and 13 digs, and Laura Harms (Jr., Little Falls, Minn.) recorded 13 kills, 10 digs and five blocks (one solo) for Augsburg (4-6 overall, 0-1 MIAC). The match was the fourth in the last five for the Auggies to go to the five-game limit.
Breann Woelfel (So., Annandale, Minn.) claimed eight kills with 17 digs, five blocks (one solo) and two service aces for the Auggies, while Julie Jenkins (Jr., Edina, Minn.) recorded six kills, 19 assists, 14 digs, four blocks and two service aces. Amanda Rueb (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./West Lutheran HS) had a team-high eight blocks to go with four kills, Shanna Reed (So., Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had 28 assists and 11 digs, Haley Bower (Sr., Brainerd, Minn.) had 49 digs and Dani Tanaka (So., Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) recorded 10 digs.
Meghan Gehring (So., Eau Claire, Wis./North HS) recorded 15 kills for the Gusties, while Nikki Ainsworth (Fr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had eight kills, 15 digs and seven blocks. Britta Bolm (Jr., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) recorded seven blocks (one solo) with five kills. Bridget Burtzel (Jr., Cold Spring, Minn./ROCORI HS) had 58 assists and 25 digs, and Emily Klein (Jr., Red Wing, Minn.) recorded 48 digs. Jenny Ewert (Fr., St. James, Minn.) had 19 digs, and Andrea Smilanich (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) had 12 digs.
Thelemann and Kron had three kills apiece in the decisive fifth game, as the Gusties built leads of 5-1 and 13-8 before closing out the match. Thelemann also recorded two blocks (one solo) in the fifth game. Harms and Lurken had two kills apiece for the Auggies.
Augsburg fell behind 20-16 in the first game, but rallied with six straight points to take the lead, then scored two points on a block by Harms and Jenkins and a kill by Jenkins to claim the first game 31-29.
Gustavus built leads of 13-5 and 21-8 en route to the convincing win in the second game, then used seven kills from Thelemann, and five kills each from Kron and Gehring to score the win in the third game.
Augsburg claimed three kills and two blocks (one solo) from Harms, and three kills each from Lurken and Woelfel to score the win in the fourth game. The Auggies again rallied from behind to win the game, coming back from a 28-24 deficit to score the last six points of the match.
Augsburg returns to action with competition at the University of Chicago (Ill.) Gargoyle Classic on Friday and Saturday (9/14-15). Gustavus returns to action on Friday with a 7 p.m. match at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minn.
