MINNEAPOLIS (9/15/07) -- Kelsey Watsabaugh (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn./Hopkins HS) claimed her first collegiate hat trick with a three-goal performance, leading Augsburg College to a 3-1 victory over Buena Vista University in a nonconference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Watsabaugh bent two goals into the net off corner kicks, in the ninth and 42nd minute, and scored unassisted from 15 yards out on a left-side shot in the 54th minute for the Auggies, now 2-2-2 overall.
"Kelsey has been outstanding for us this week. I'm very proud of what she is accomplishing so far this season," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre.
Augsburg outshot Buena Vista (1-5-0 overall) by a 48-6 margin, including a 30-4 advantage in the second half. Augsburg also had nine corner kicks to Buena Vista's one. Twelve different Auggies -- all but one of the position players who saw playing time -- recorded shots in the game.
"We are still struggling to score goals in the run of play and must continue to work hard to improve in this area," Navarre said. "I'm confident that we will be able to put the pieces together as the season progresses."
The Beavers' lone goal came on an Emily Heger (Fr., Sioux City, Iowa/Lawton-Bronson HS) rebound off a free kick by Brooke Drobney (Fr., Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek HS) in the 62nd minute.
Watsabaugh recorded her second multiple-goal game of the season with the hat trick. She has scored a team-high six goals this season, and has scored in three of Augsburg's six games this year.
Maggie DeGroot * (Jr., Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) made three saves in 61 minutes in goal for the Auggies, with Jenny Kieffaber (Fr., Lakeville, Minn./Burnsville HS) making one save in 29 minutes of relief. Amber Barnes (Fr., Sturgis, S.D.) recorded 20 saves in goal for Buena Vista.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday (9/19) at 4 p.m. with a game at Hamline. Buena Vista finishes its weekend trip to the Twin Cities on Sunday (9/16) at 3:30 p.m., with a game at Hamline.
"We are excited to get back to the conference and play an improved Hamline team on Wednesday," Navarre said.
