MINNEAPOLIS (9/19/07) -- Nick Manders * (Sr., De Pere, Wis./West De Pere HS) scored two goals and added an assist, leading the Augsburg College men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Hamline University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Tyler Seidel (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) had a goal and an assist, and Andrew Seidel (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) added a goal for the Auggies, who won their third game in a row in improving to 6-2-0 overall, 2-0-0 in MIAC play.
Augsburg dominated possession for most of the game, claiming a 21-9 shots advantage over Hamline (4-2-0 overall, 1-1-0 MIAC), including a 15-4 edge in the first half. Augsburg also had 10 corner kicks to Hamline's four.
"This was our first full 90-minute performance. We were fairly clean throughout the contest, and made the most of our chances. I didn't expect the score to be what it was at the end when playing a good Hamline team," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Nick Manders * left his mark on the game. Not only did he score twice and set up Andrew Seidel, but he won every single ball in the air all over the field. He was tremendous."
Manders scored off a corner kick from Matt Bowman (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.) in the 24th minute, then slammed home a right-side feed from Tyler Seidel in the 47th minute. Ten minutes later, Seidel stole a defensive clearance attempt, dribbled past Hamline goalkeeper Andrew Clement (Sr., Victoria, Minn./Minnetonka HS) and deposited the ball in the open net.
Andrew Seidel capped the Auggie scoring by taking a long feed downfield from Manders, working the ball to the center and putting the ball into the right corner of the net in the 71st minute.
"Matt Bowman was solid again and the combination of Tyler Seidel and Kelsey Duerr (So., Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) up front is becoming fun to watch," Holker said. "Ryley Teske (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Lutheran HS) had one of his best performances in an Augsburg kit as well. Right now he is just holding down the midfield. James See (Jr., Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) smothered Drew Lucas and Matt Warhol, and looks to be dangerous in the attack."
Clement collected four saves in goal for Hamline. Augsburg goalkeeper Matt Carlson (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) started and made three saves before going down with an injury in the 56th minute. Evan Fuhs (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) made one save in relief.
"It is unfortunate Carlson went down. He suffered an injury, and we expect to lose him for at least 2-3 weeks," Holker said. "The good news is that we are deep at the goalkeeper position, and we won't skip a beat with Fuhs back there."
Both teams return to MIAC action on Saturday (9/22). Augsburg hosts St. Thomas at 7 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, while Hamline hosts St. Mary's at 1 p.m.
"St. Thomas is a rivalry game, no doubt," Holker said. "The points on the line Saturday night are incredibly important. We know Voeller and Stillwell will provide a challenge for our backs, especially when Jon gets in on set plays. Hopefully, our crowd will be there to help us en masse."
