MINNEAPOLIS (9/22/07) -- Joe Voeller (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) had a hand in each of the University of St. Thomas' three goals, scoring one goal and adding two assists, as the Tommies shut out host Augsburg College 3-0 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer match on Saturday night at Edor Nelson Field.
Thomas Gjervold (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) had a goal and an assist, and Henry Ndawula (So., Masaka, Uganda) had a goal for the Tommies, now 5-2-1 overall, 2-0-1 in MIAC play. Dan Hutton (Sr., Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) collected his second shutout of the season in goal with eight saves.
"We were the victim of efficient finishing tonight," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Voeller and Gjervold were on another planet. Their pace caused us problems and their ability to finish what they started was tremendous. This is a strong St. Thomas team."
Evan Fuhs (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) had five saves in goal for Augsburg, now 6-3-0 overall, 2-1-0 in MIAC play. Augsburg had its three-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
St. Thomas scored twice in the first half, as Gjervold took a long feed from Voeller and sprinted for a shot to the lower left corner of the goal in the third minute, and Voeller put home a one-timer from a long feed from Gjervold in the 35th minute. Just 2:20 into the second half, Ndawula capped the scoring for the Tommies with a one-timer off a long feed from Voeller.
"Our play was pretty average," Holker said. "Conceding a goal two minutes in is never good, and put added psychological pressure on us immediately. I don't think we trained particularly well the last two nights, and our performance reflected that."
Both teams had 18 shots in the game. Augsburg had 11 corner kicks to St. Thomas' five.
Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (9/26) at 4 p.m. with an MIAC game at St. Olaf. St. Thomas is in action on Sunday (9/23) at 12 p.m., hosting Wisconsin-Whitewater in a nonconference game.
"We must put that result behind us and focus on St. Olaf," Holker said. "The Oles are very good in midfield with the Zietlows and the Kennedys. They were unfortunate to fall at Macalester last night, and will be very difficult to play on their field."
