MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/29/07) -- Putting together 503 yards of total offense, including 404 yards on the ground, the Concordia College-Moorhead football team pulled away in the final three quarters to claim a 51-21 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football game on Saturday afternoon at Jake Christiansen Stadium.
Tied at 14-14 after one quarter, the Cobbers (3-2 overall, 1-2 MIAC) scored 37 unanswered points before Augsburg (1-3 overall, 0-3 MIAC) scored in the final minutes.
Augsburg put together 349 yards of total offense, including 196 passing yards and two touchdowns from quarterback
Jordan Berg (Jr., Gaylord, Minn./Sibley East HS), who completed 23-of-37 passes with just one interception.
Royce Winford (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo HS) caught both of Berg's touchdown passes, a 40-yard reception in the first quarter and a five-yard pass in the fourth quarter. He ended up catching four passes for 53 yards.
Mike Nourie (So., Nicollet, Minn.) caught 10 passes for 89 yards, while
Muneer Al-Hameed (Fr., Woodbury, Minn./Minneapolis Washburn HS) caught five passes for 41 yards.
Running back
Jason Potts (Jr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) reached the 100-yard plateau for the second time this season and third time in his career, with 109 rushing yards on 18 carries. He gained 90 of those yards in the first quarter, including an 18-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter.
Concordia's Jesse Nelson and Adam Swingdorf provided the bulk of the Cobbers' rushing attack, as Nelson rushed for 122 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown, and Swingdorf rushed for 101 yards on 21 carries with three touchdowns. Nick Reinisch and Nick Birchem also rushed for touchdowns, and quarterback Jesse Nelson threw one touchdown pass, a 31-yarder to Nick Alton. Eleven different Cobbers had at least one rush in the game, with six rushing for 20 yards or more.
Defensively,
Adam Ebert (So., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) led the Auggies with 12 tackles (nine solo), including two tackles for loss.
Garrett Adamson (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn./Hill-Murray HS) had 11 tackles, and
Donovan Bates (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) had eight tackles (five solo), a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. For Concordia, Isaac Berling had seven tackles (seven solo), including one for loss, while Grant Aakre had six tackles (four solo).
Both teams return to play next Saturday (10/6) at 1 p.m., as Augsburg travels to face Wartburg (Iowa) in a nonconference game, while Concordia hosts Hamline in an MIAC game.
