MINNEAPOLIS (9/7/07) -- Alex Hildebrandt (So., St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) and Kelsey Duerr (So., Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park HS) both scored goals off of set pieces by Matt Bowman (Fr., Maple Grove, Minn.), as Augsburg College claimed a 2-0 win over Northwestern College-Roseville in a nonconference men's soccer game Friday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Hildebrandt scored a goal off a deflection in front following a free kick by Bowman in the 23rd minute, and Duerr scored on a header from a free kick from 20 yards out by Bowman in the 34th minute.
"Our set pieces today were very strong. We were inches away from netting 3-4 goals. Bowman was putting them in good spots and our big men were all over it," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "I was happy with Mac Miller's (So., Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) performance in the center of the back when he got on. Kelsey Duerr was very solid in the first half before being replaced by Mac. It was good to see a lot of players do well with their minutes."
Goalkeepers Matt Carlson (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) and Evan Fuhs (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) combined for the shutout for Augsburg (3-1-0). The 2-0 shutout win was Augsburg's third in a row by that score. Northwestern-Roseville is now 1-4-0 overall.
Augsburg outshot Northwestern by a 19-12 margin in the game and had eight corner kicks to Northwestern's one.
Josiah DeFelice (Sr., Temuco, Chile) had three shots for Northwestern, and Danny King (So., Willmar, Minn.) collected 10 saves in goal for the Eagles.
Augsburg returns to action on Sunday (9/9) at 1 p.m., with a nonconference game at Carroll (Wis.). Northwestern has a week off before opening Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play with a game at Bethany Lutheran next Friday (9/14) at 4 p.m.
"Carroll will pose a bit of a problem because they play with three central midfielders against our two," Holker said. "They are a quick team that is technically clean and they have a good freshman goalkeeper from Mounds View. We are looking forward to the challenge in what should be a very good game."
