WINONA, Minn. (1/16/08) -- Christa Suedbeck (JR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 13 rebounds, to go along with two blocked shots, leading Augsburg College to a 62-58 victory over host St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Wednesday night at the SMU Field House.
Kristina Lurken * (Sr, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) scored 14 points with five assists and seven rebounds, while Shannon Renne (FY, Nicollet, Minn.) hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points for Augsburg (5-7 overall, 3-6 MIAC), which broke a five-game losing streak.
St. Mary's (3-9 overall, 2-7 MIAC) was led by Jess Weisbrod (SR, Rollingstone, Minn./Winona Cotter HS), who had 26 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season, to go along with two assists and two steals. Kelly Tanke (SR, La Crosse, Wis./Logan HS) scored 11 points.
Cherie Kulig (FY, Independence, Wis.) and Jess Miller (FY, Carver, Minn./Chaska, Minn.) scored six points apiece for the Cardinals, with Kulig adding four rebounds and three assists, and Miller adding two assists and two rebounds.
Augsburg led the back-and-forth game 24-21 at halftime, then used an 8-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game, 49-39 with 7:11 left in the contest. St. Mary's scored the next eight points of the game to cut the lead to two points, but a jumper by Sudebeck with 4:42 left gave the Auggies a 51-47 lead.
St. Mary's cut the lead to two points again at 53-51 with 3:16 left, but Katie LaGrave * (SR, Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS) drilled a three-pointer to give the Auggies a 56-51 advantage with 1:55 left. La Grave scored eight points with four assists in the game.
As a team, Augsburg hit 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field, while St. Mary's hit 35.0 percent (21-of-60). Augsburg outrebounded St. Mary's by a 45-33 margin.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Saturday (1/19) at 1 p.m., with Augsburg playing at Concordia-Moorhead and St. Mary's playing at Bethel.
