MINNEAPOLIS (1/19/08) -- Tiffany Magnuson (JR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) and Katie Medd (SR, Mankato, Minn./East HS) had a goal and assist each, leading Augsburg College to a 4-1 victory over the College of St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game on Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Carly Facchini (FY, Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) and Jackie Keller * (SR, Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) scored goals, and Whitney Restemayer (SO, Bemidji, Minn.) had two assists for Augsburg (3-10-0 overall, 3-5-0 MIAC), which completed the series sweep of the Wildcats with the victory.
Kaytlyn Mount (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored an unassisted goal early in the second period for St. Catherine (4-10-1 overall, 1-7-0 MIAC).
Facchini opened the scoring for the Auggies with her first collegiate goal at the 16:49 mark of the first period, putting home a shot across the crease from Jenna Knudtson (FY, Austin, Minn.).
After Mount tied the game for the Wildcats on her unassisted goal at the 1:23 mark of the second frame, Augsburg went ahead for good on a goal by Magnuson, assisted by Restemayer and Medd, at the 16:40 mark.
Augsburg clinched the win with two power-play goals during a St. Catherine major penalty -- Medd scoring from Jess Olson (SO, Hamel, Minn./Wayzata HS) and Restemayer at the 8:27 mark, and Keller scoring from Magnuson at the 9:57 mark.
St. Catherine outshot Augsburg by a 33-31 margin. Toni Menth (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) collected 32 saves in goal for the Auggies in a winning effort, while Mel Gerten (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) claimed 27 saves for the Wildcats. Augsburg also successfully killed off eight St. Catherine power plays in the game.
Both teams return to MIAC play next weekend, as Augsburg faces St. Benedict in a series on Friday and Saturday (1/25-26), and St. Catherine faces St. Mary's on Friday and Saturday.
