ST. PETER, Minn. (1/26/08) -- Jess Vadnais scored 25 points on 8-of-10 shooting, leading her Gustavus Adolphus College women's basketball team to an 86-52 win over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Gus Young Court.
The Gusties (10-6 overall, 9-4 MIAC) pulled away from a 10-point halftime advantage to lead by as many as 36 points down the stretch, with 14 players seeing game action and 12 scoring. Brianna Radtke, Katie Layman and Molly Mathiowetz scored 10 points apiece for Gustavus.
Augsburg (5-11 overall, 3-10 MIAC) was led by Katie LaGrave * (SR, Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS), who scored 15 points with four rebounds, and Michelle Richter (JR, Chaska, Minn.), who scored 11 points with seven rebounds and three steals.
Gustavus never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 10-3 advantage in the first three minutes of play and a 21-7 advantage with 13:04 left. After that, the closest the Auggies would get in the first half was five points, and eight points in the first minute of the second half.
Augsburg was hampered by a below-average shooting night, hitting just 31.0 percent (18-of-58) from the field and just 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from three-point range. Gustavus hit 54.1 percent (33-of-61) from the field, including 7-of-10 from three-point range. Gustavus scored 29 points off of 28 Augsburg turnovers, while Augsburg managed just eight points on 20 Gustie miscues. Gustavus outrebounded Augsburg by a 40-36 margin.
Noreen Hogan (SR, Moline, Ill./Alleman HS) scored seven points for the Auggies, while Shannon Renne (FY, Nicollet, Minn.), Brietta Schluender (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Ashley Thoeny (SO, Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins HS) scored four points each.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Wednesday (1/30) at 7:30 p.m., as Augsburg plays at St. Catherine and Gustavus hosts Bethel.
