ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/7/08) -- With four players scoring in double-figures, the Macalester College women's basketball team led nearly the entire way in a 71-63 triumph over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Monday evening at the College of St. Catherine's Butler Center.
Danielle Johnson scored 18 points to lead the Scots (4-5 overall, 3-5 MIAC), while Ann Baltzer had 16 points, Alyssa Lunde had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Jessica Ramirez had 10 points. Trina PaStarr had seven points with 13 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Augsburg (4-5 overall, 2-4 MIAC) was paced by Katie LaGrave * (SR, Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS), who scored a season-high 23 points, hitting five 3-pointers. She also had four rebounds. Michelle Richter (JR, Chaska, Minn.) scored 10 points with five rebounds.
Melanie Wigen (FY, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley HS) scored seven points with four assists and two steals for the Auggies, while Megan Krumrie (SR, Elk Mound, Wis.) also had seven points. Christa Suedbeck (JR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Shannon Renne (FY, Nicollet, Minn.) scored six points each, with Suedbeck adding nine rebounds and two blocked shots.
Save for a 3-2 lead for the Auggies in the first two minutes of play, the Scots led the entire way. The Scots led by nine points, 33-24, at halftime, and pulled away to lead by as many as 16 points in the second half. The closest Augsburg could come in the second half was six points, 61-55 with 2:01 left to play.
Macalester took advantage of foul trouble by the Auggies throughout the game, hitting 22-of-31 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Augsburg hit just 9-of-17 from the charity stripe. Macalester also outrebounded Augsburg by a 46-37 margin, and connected on 47.1 percent (24-of-51) from the field, compared to 36.4 percent (24-of-66) for the Auggies.
Both teams return to MIAC play with road games on Wednesday (1/9) at 7:30 p.m., as Augsburg plays at St. Thomas and Macalester plays at St. Benedict.
