NORTHFIELD, Minn. (10/11/08) -- David Scheller (FY, Maple Grove, Minn.) scored his third goal of the season on a blast in the 33rd minute, lifting the Augsburg College men's soccer team to one of its biggest victory of the season, a 1-0 triumph over Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference-leader Carleton College on Saturday afternoon at Carleton's Bell Field.
Scheller scored on assists from Marcus Elmerskog (FY, Trondheim, Norway) and #D.J. Wendell# (JR, Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS), and goalkeeper Donnie McCarthy (SR, Whitehall, Mich.) collected one save for his third shutout of the season and fifth of his career for the Auggies (7-2-3 overall, 5-2-0 MIAC).
"Scheller's goal was incredible," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "He took it well off his shoulder and hammered it into the top of the goal. The service was good, the flick was well-placed, and the finish was fun to watch."
Augsburg snapped a 21-game conference regular-season unbeaten streak (18-0-3) and a 28-game regular-season overall unbeaten streak (24-0-4) for Carleton (11-1-1 overall, 6-1-1 MIAC), which had not lost in conference play since 2006 and in overall play since 2007. Including playoffs, the Knights were 32-2-4 since their last conference loss. The Auggie victory also broke a 15-game home unbeaten streak (11-0-4) in MIAC play for the Knights since 2005. Carleton was ranked No. 8 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America national rankings.
Carleton outshot Augsburg by a 9-6 margin, but had just two shots in the second half, thanks to Augsburg's defense. Carleton also had five corner kicks to Augsburg's two.
"James See (SR, Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) was incredible today. He took care of one of the best players in the conference in Paul Pedtke, making sure he didn't hurt us. He covered ground well and his tackles were strong throughout the match," Holker said. "Ryley Teske (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Lutheran HS) was solid again. Hopefully he can get a bit more fit and help us out some more. Peter Loyd (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Alex Hildebrandt (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) were very good in the center of the back. They provide security for us back there game after game -- a great pair."
Recovering from a 1-0 loss to Gustavus on Wednesday, the Auggies moved into third place in the MIAC standings with 10 points. There are three conference games remaining for the Auggies, and the top four teams in the conference standings qualify for the league playoffs.
Augsburg has a nonconference game on Tuesday (10/14) at 4 p.m. at St. Scholastica in Duluth.
"This was a good response from our guys after Wednesday's game. We are in a good spot in the playoff race right now, but we want more than that. Hopefully we get some help in the next two weeks from some other teams," Holker said. "Tuesday's game will be a test, as St. Scholastica has earned strong results recently. It's an important game for us, even though it is out of conference."
