DULUTH, Minn. (10/14/08) -- Nick Anderson (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored Augsburg College's lone goal of the game on a header from Andrew Seidel (SR, Woodbury, Minn.) in the 18th minute, as the Auggies claimed a 1-1, two-overtime tie with the College of St. Scholastica in a nonconference men's soccer game on Tuesday afternoon at CSS' Saints Field.

Dustin James scored on a cross from Jermaine Dacres and Greg Doornink in the 33rd minute for St. Scholastica, and the two teams remained scoreless for the remainder of the game. St. Scholastica (11-3-1 overall), leaders in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, outshot Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contender Augsburg (7-2-4 overall) by a 12-10 margin, including a 4-0 margin in the 20 minutes of overtime.

"Nick's finish was textbook from Seidel's service. Andy has done quite well since he has moved back to the right side of midfield," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "St. Scholastica made it tough for us. We looked sharp in the first 25 minutes, knocking the ball around well, but they posed a threat up the left side and one dropped ball led to their goal. From that point on, we struggled to find possession again."

Goalkeeper Donnie McCarthy (SR, Whitehall, Mich.) had two saves in goal for the tie, while CSS' Sam Reed had one save.

"Unfortunately, the tie may have cost us more than a strong position for an at-large bid," Holker said. "Peter Loyd (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) went down with an injury midway through the first half and was unable to return. We used 15 players in the game because we don't have enough healthy bodies at this time, and two additional players had an academic commitment they needed to fulfill rendering them unavailable for the trip."

Augsburg currently stands in fourth place in the MIAC with 10 conference points, with three league games remaining in the regular season. The top four teams in the league standings qualify for the conference postseason playoffs. Augsburg hosts Bethel in a conference game on Friday (10/17) at 7:30 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.

"Regardless, their direct play forced us to work hard to get up and down the field. This will bode well for our fitness as we get down the stretch," Holker said. "I know our guys are looking forward to Friday's MIAC contest with Bethel. We all want to get this taste out of our mouths."
