MINNEAPOLIS (10/18/08) -- Abdulwali Aman (SO, Bellingham, Wash./Roosevelt HS) had a goal and an assist, and Dustin Whelan (SR, Richland, Wash./Hanford HS) scored on a give-and-go with Aman five minutes into the first overtime, as Clarke College (Iowa) claimed a 2-1 victory over host Augsburg College in a nonconference men's soccer game Saturday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (8-3-4), which outshot Clarke by a 28-10 margin, gained its lone goal from #D.J. Wendell# (JR, Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS), as he took a feed from the center from Lucas Ingram (JR, Woodbury, Minn.) and slid a shot across the goal mouth in the 40th minute.
Aman scored the game's first goal on a long feed from Jason Reno (SR, West Richland, Wash./Hanford HS) in the 32nd minute for the Crusaders (6-8-2 overall).
The Auggies had numerous chances to score, but Clarke goalkeeper Phillip Flores (JR, Belton, Mo.) collected 11 saves, including eight in the second half, several on point-blank chances inside the penalty box.
"This was a chance to use some different players, and we took advantage of that. Unfortunately, we didn't get the result we wanted. Our performance was average, but we still had numerous chances to score goals," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "We will take this effort and learn from it. It will be interesting to see how we respond on Monday in training."
Wendell, Ryan Sorensen (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) and Alex Hildebrandt (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) had four shots apiece for the Auggies, while Aman had four shots for the Crusaders. Augsburg goalkeeper Donnie McCarthy (SR, Whitehall, Mich.) made four saves.
Augsburg returns to action with a nonconference game at Northwestern-Roseville on Tuesday (10/21) at 3 p.m. Clarke also has a nonconference game on Tuesday, at Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 7 p.m.
