ROSEVILLE, Minn. (10/21/08) -- James See (SR, Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had a goal and an assist, and #D.J. Wendell# (JR, Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS) scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season, as Augsburg College claimed a 2-0 victory over host Northwestern College-Roseville in a nonconference men's soccer game on Tuesday afternoon at Reynolds Field.
Pascaul Venter (JR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) did not have to make a save in goal in recording his fourth shutout of the season and 17th of his career for the Auggies (9-3-4 overall). Augsburg outshot Northwestern (6-9-1) by a 12-3 margin in the game.
"Pascaul was intelligent today," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "He made good decisions all around and was especially helpful with his distribution from his feet."
Wendell scored in the eighth minute, assisted by See, and See scored his first goal of the season in the 67th minute, off a free kick by Lucas Ingram (JR, Woodbury, Minn.).
"Lucas Ingram was very good today. His defending was crisp and he made great decisions with the ball," Holker said. "James See * finished well on the free kick. Lucas tapped it to him and he hammered a ball into the top corner."
Augsburg's defense limited Northwestern to just three shots in the game, all in the first half. Danny King had five saves in a losing effort in goal for the Eagles, while Josh Niedermayer had a save in relief.
"Ryley Teske (JR, Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Lutheran HS) makes a huge difference for our team. He was a handful tonight and played more minutes than he has all year. His fitness is coming along at the right time," Holker said. "David Scheller (FY, Maple Grove, Minn.) was dangerous up the flank and his services continue to improve. He will play an important role in Saturday's game vs. St. John's.
Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Saturday (10/25) at 1 p.m. with a game at St. John's. The Auggies currently sit in a second-place tie with Gustavus with 12 conference points, while St. John's is in fifth place with 10 points. The top four teams in league play qualify for the conference postseason playoffs.
"It was good for us to get the monkey off our back a bit. We have been struggling to find goals lately, so recording two was a relief for our backs," Holker said. "St. John's will pose a significantly stiffer test for us with playoff implications at stake. With Levi Lowell and Brian Horst returning from (yellow-card accumulation) suspension, the Johnnies will be fresh and very, very dangerous."
