Augsburg opens season with 7-0 loss to Wisconsin-River Falls

MINNEAPOLIS (11/7/08) -- Brittany Erickson (SO, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) scored two goals, and Stefanie Schmitz (JR, Farmington, Minn.), Jessica Thompson (SO, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Abby Sunderman (JR, Le Sueur, Minn.) had a goal and assist apiece, as the University of Wisconsin-River Falls scored a 7-0 win over host Augsburg College in the season-opening nonconference women's hockey game for both teams on Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Augsburg goalie Grace Edgar (SO, Plano, Texas/Plano West HS), playing in her first Auggie game in relief of starter Toni Menth (JR, Buffalo, Minn.), claimed 30 saves in 37 minutes of play in goal in the second and third periods. Menth had 22 saves in 23 minutes of work.

Wisconsin-River Falls outshot Augsburg by a 59-22 margin en route to the victory. Katie Flanagan (FY, Roseville, Minn.) and Kayleigh Bell (SO, Stillwater, Minn.) also scored goals for the Falcons, with Jamie Briski (SO, Chisholm, Minn.) adding two assists. Melissa Deardorff (FY, Anchorage, Alaska) stopped all 22 shots she faced for the shutout in goal.

Kali Holst (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) and Jenna Knudtson (SO, Austin, Minn.) had four shots apiece for the Auggies, with Erin Leyden (SO, Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South HS) and Jess Olson (JR, Hamel, Minn./Wayzata HS) contributing three shots each.

Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a two-game series against Bethel next weekend, with next Friday's (11/14) game at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena, and next Saturday's (11/15) game at the Schwan SuperRink in Blaine. Wisconsin-River Falls is in action on Saturday (11/8) at 2:05 p.m., hosting St. Catherine.
