Men's Hockey 11/8/08 -- Wisconsin-Superior 5, Augsburg 2
SUPERIOR, Wis. (11/8/08) -- Scoring three goals in a row to overcome a 2-2, second-period tie, the University of Wisconsin-Superior claimed a 5-2 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a nonconference men's hockey game on Saturday night at Wessman Arena.
Trailing 2-0 after the first period, Augsburg (0-3-0 overall) scored twice in the second frame to tie the game, as Mario Mjelleli (SO, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) scored on the power play from Trevor Doden (FY, Red Wing, Minn.) and Nick Guran (FY, McHenry, Ill.) at the 11:08 mark, and Guran scored on a penalty shot at the 16:53 mark.
But Wisconsin-Superior (5-1-0 overall) scored three straight goals to take the win. Braden Desmet and Chris Berry scored goals in a 1:18 span late in the second period, and Kevin Huck scored the final goal of the game at the 16:55 mark of the third period. Rob Turville and Jeff Herman scored the first-period goals for the Yellowjackets. Huck added two assists for a three-point night, while Desmet added an assist.
Wisconsin-Superior outshot Augsburg by a 31-29 margin in the game, while the Auggies went 1-for-8 on the power play. Chad Beiswenger had 27 saves for the Yellowjackets, while Andrew Kent (SR, Lakeville, Minn.) had 26 saves for the Auggies.
Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a series against Bethel University next weekend, with Friday's (11/14) game at 7:05 p.m. at the Schwan SuperRink in Blaine, and Saturday's (11/15) game at 7 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
