Ellertson scores twice, Auggies top Gustavus 4-3!

ST. PETER, Minn. (2/1/08) -- Cory Ellertson (FY, Albert Lea, Minn.) scored two power-play goals, including the game-winning goal with 1:35 left in regulation, as the Augsburg College men's hockey team claimed a 4-3 victory over host Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday night at the Don Roberts Ice Rink.

Ellertson figured in all four goals for Augsburg (3-13-2 overall, 1-8-0 MIAC), with two goals and two assists on the night. Dan Carlson (SR, Roseville, Minn.) had a goal and two assists on the evening.

Tim Ornell had a goal and assist for Gustavus (9-10-1 overall, 6-5-0 MIAC), while David Martinson had two assists.

Augsburg won despite being outshot by a 32-17 margin. Andrew Kent (JR, Lakeville, Minn.) claimed 29 saves for the Auggies in the win, while Matt Lopes took the loss for the Gusties in goal with 13 saves.

Augsburg went 3-for-4 on the power play, scoring its final three goals in man-advantage situations. After Joel Sauer (FY, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) opened the scoring for the Auggies from Ellertson just 40 seconds into play, the Auggies took a 2-0 lead on Carlson's power-play goal, from Ellertson and Dan Leopold (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS), at the 12:03 mark.

Gustavus cut into the lead just 66 seconds later, as Spencer Campion scored from Martinson and Ornell. The Gusties tied the game at the 12:32 mark of the second period, as Ornell scored from Rory Dynan.

Augsburg took the lead back on Ellertson's first power-play goal of the game, a marker from Carlson at the 3:36 mark of the thid period. Gustavus tied the game at the 9:27 mark, as Brad Wieck scored from Martinson and Ben Ollila.

But Augsburg won the game on Ellertson's second goal fo the game, a power-play goal from Chris Johnson (SO, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) and Carlson at the 18:25 mark.

The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (2/2) at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
