MINNEAPOLIS (2/15/08) -- Nick Zilla (FY, Mound, Minn.) and Dustin Fulton (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had a goal and assist apiece, as Hamline University claimed a 4-3 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey contest on Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Augsburg goalie Andrew Kent (JR, Lakeville, Minn.) claimed 35 saves to keep the Auggies in the contest, as Augsburg (5-15-2 overall, 3-10-0) was outshot by Hamline (12-6-4 overall, 8-3-2 MIAC) by a 39-17 margin.
After a scoreless first period, the teams traded goals in the second frame, as Fulton and Joe Long (JR, Dayton, Minn.) scored for the Pipers, and Kellen Chamblee (JR, Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville HS) and Chris Johnson (SO, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) scored for the Auggies.
But the Pipers went ahead for good wtih two goals in the third period. Zilka scored an unassisted goal at the 10:36 mark, followed 2:12 later by a goal from Andrew Birkholz (Jr, Maple Grove, Minn.). Augsburg cut into the lead with a power-play goal from Ben Roberts (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) at the 17:49 mark, but could not rally closer with an extra skater in the final 1:23.
Roberts and Johnson added assists for two-point nights for the Auggies. Matt Wanvig (SO, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) collected 14 saves for Hamline.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (2/16) at 7:15 p.m. at the Drake Ice Arena in St. Paul.
