ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/16/08) -- Dustin Fulton (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) claimed a natural hat trick with three straight goals, and Andrew Birkholz (JR, Maple Grove, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal at the 4:06 mark of the third period, as Hamline University rallied from a 2-0 deficit to score a 4-3 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey contest on Saturday night at the Drake Arena.
Augsburg (5-16-2, 3-11-0 MIAC) took a 2-0 lead on first-period goals from Tim Lawson (SR, Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer HS) and Chris Johnson (SO, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS), with Dave Carroll (SO, Richfield, Minn.) and Gerrit Hooker (FY, Dayton, Minn./Osseo HS) assisting on Lawson's goal, and Jim Jensen (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) and Dan Leopold (SR, Afton, Minn./Stillwater HS) assisting on Johnson's marker.
But Hamline (13-6-4 overall, 9-3-2 MIAC) took the lead as Fulton scored three straight goals, including two on the power play -- a goal at the 16:08 mark of the second period, and goals at the 54-second mark and 2:25 mark of the third period. Birkholz and Joe Long (JR, Dayton, Minn.) assisted on Fulton's second-period goal; Long assisted on Fulton's second goal, and Chris Berengeuer (FY, Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Jared Hummel (FY, Eagan, Minn.) assisted on Fulton's third goal.
After Fulton's third goal, Augsburg tied the game just 32 seconds later, as Brett Way (JR, Grand Ledge, Mich.) scored from Bryan Frischmann (FY, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) and Kellen Chamblee (JR, Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville HS). But Birkholz gave the Pipers the lead back for good, scoring from Nick Zilka (FY, Mound, Minn.) at the 4:06 mark. Hamline later killed off a 5-on-3 Augsburg power play late in the game to secure the victory.
Augsburg goalie Andrew Kent (JR, Lakeville, Minn.) claimed 32 saves to keep the Auggies in the contest, as Augsburg was outshot by Hamline by a 36-18 margin. Zachary Faust (SO, White Bear Lake, Minn.) made 15 saves for the Pipers, who clinched a spot in the five-team MIAC postseason playoffs with the win.
Augsburg finishes its season with a series against St. Mary's next Friday and Saturday (2/22-23), while Hamline faces St. John's in a series on Friday and Saturday.
