MINNEAPOLIS (2/16/08) -- Melanie Hageman (SR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS) scored 18 points with seven rebounds for Concordia College-Moorhead, overcoming a near-triple double by Augsburg College guard Kristina Lurken * (SR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS), as the Cobbers held off a second-half Auggie charge in a 75-67 triumph in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Lurken fell just two points short of a triple-double, but had eight points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds for Augsburg (6-17 overall, 4-16 MIAC). Christa Suedbeck (JR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) led all players with 19 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots for the Auggies, while Katie LaGrave * (SR, Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS) scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting with five rebounds, and Shannon Renne (FY, Nicollet, Minn.) scored 11 points.
All five Concordia (15-8 overall, 14-6 MIAC) starters scored in double-figures, led by Hageman's 18 points. Anna Matetich (SO, Hibbing, Minn.) claimed a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Sara Sorbo (SO, Adams, N.D./Adams-Edmore HS) scored 13 points with six assists, Jenna Freudenberg (JR, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) scored 13 points, and Maggie Bauernfeind (FY, Rosemount, Minn.) scored 12 points.
Concordia scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed, building a lead of as many as 19 points in the first half. The Cobbers led 37-19 at halftime, but Augsburg slowly chipped away at the advantage in the second half. A 10-2 run cut the advantage to six points, 56-50 with 10:06 left, and the Auggies trimmed the lead to two points at 61-59 with 5:31 left. Augsburg again cut the advantage to two points with 1:56 left at 67-65, but Sorbo hit a jumper with 1:28 left to give the Cobbers a four-point advantage, and the Cobbers connected on all six shots from the free-throw line in the final 28 seconds to finish with the eight-point win.
Augsburg connected on 40.0 percent (22-of-55) from the field in the game, while Concordia connected on 38.2 percent (26-of-68). The Cobbers also hit 14-of-15 from the free-throw line, while Augsburg hit 19-of-27. Concordia outrebounded Augsburg by a 43-35 margin.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Wednesday (2/20), as Augsburg hosts St. Mary's at 7:30 p.m., and Concordia hosts St. Thomas at 5:45 p.m.
