Magnuson's hat trick leads Augsburg to 5-3 victory over St. Mary's!

MINNEAPOLIS (2/22/08) -- Tiffany Magnuson (JR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) claimed her fourth collegiate hat trick with a three-goal performance, as her Augsburg College women's hockey team collected a 5-3 victory over visiting St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Friday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Magnuson scored her first goal at the 13:44 mark of the first period, then opened each of the next two periods with goals off opening faceoffs -- 16 seconds into the second period and 12 seconds into the third period.

Whitney Restemayer (SO, Bemidji, Minn.) and Sara Toft (SO, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored unassisted goals for Augsburg (4-16-2 overall, 4-11-2 MIAC), which broke an eight-game winless streak (0-6-2) with the victory.

Jamie Henneman (FY, Countryside, Ill.), Sonja Sorakrai (FY, Richfield, Minn.) and Amy Zimniewicz (FY, River Falls, Wis./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored goals for St. Mary's (5-15-2 overall, 5-11-1 MIAC).

The teams complete the MIAC series, the final series of the season for both teams, on Saturday (2/23) at 7:05 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona, Minn.

Augsburg won despite being outshot by a 42-27 margin, including a 17-5 margin in the third period. St. Mary's also had seven power plays in the game, scoring once, while Augsburg was scoreless on three power plays.

Auggie goalie Toni Menth (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) stopped 39 shots for the win, the 18th time this season she has claimed 30 or more saves. Jessie Smith (SR, Steamboat Springs, Colo./Lowell-Whiteman HS) recorded 22 saves in goal for the Cardinals.

Henneman opened the scoring for the Cardinals with a goal from Ashley Mileykovsky (FY, Northbrook, Ill.) just 3:48 into play on a wraparound goal. Augsburg tied the game at the 13:44 mark, with Magnuson's first goal of the game from Jenna Knudtson (FY, Austin, Minn.) and Katie Medd (SR, Mankato, Minn./East HS). But the Cardinals took the lead on Sorakrai's first collegiate goal at the 16:29 mark, assisted by Cierra Lopis (FY, Macomb, Ill.) and Cassie Stoner (SO, Kenosha, Wis.).

Augsburg took the lead for good with a three-goal outburst in the second period. Magnuson scored off the opening draw from Knudtson and Emily Merhar (JR, Eden Prairie, Minn.), and Restemayer scored on an unassisted blast from the point at the 4:38 margin. Toft followed with her first goal of the unassisted on an unassisted steal and score at the 14:23 mark.

Augsburg took a 5-2 lead on Magnuson's third goal of the game, assisted by Jackie Keller * (SR, Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) 12 seconds into the period. Zimniewicz scored an unassisted power-play goal just four seconds into a player advantage at the 13:41 mark for the Cardinals to complete the scoring.
