ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (2/9/08) -- Mindy Schmidt scored 15 of her game-high 25 points in the second half, leading the College of St. Benedict to a 79-59 win over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Claire Lynch Hall.
Mackenzie O'Neil scored 14 points and Ariel Tauer scored 10 points with five rebounds and three assists for St. Benedict (17-4 overall, 15-3 MIAC), which led 35-22 at halftime and by as many as 22 points in the game.
Augsburg (6-15 overall, 4-14 MIAC) was paced by Christa Suedbeck (JR, Hugo, Minn./White Bear Lake HS), who scored 19 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Shannon Renne (FY, Nicollet, Minn.) scored 12 points with two steals, and Katie LaGrave * (SR, Okinawa, Japan/Kadena HS) scored 11 points with four rebounds.
St. Benedict scored the first 12 points of the game, and Augsburg was unable to score until a basket with 13:08 left in the first half. The Blazers eventually jumped out to a 21-2 advantage, and while Augsburg was able to cut the advantage to 13 points at halftime, the Auggies were unable to shrink the lead below double-digits in the second half.
Augsburg was limited to just 18.5 percent (5-of-27) shooting from the field in the first half, 34.0 percent (18-of-53) in the game. Meanwhile, St. Benedict shot 46.2 percent (30-of-65) from the field in the contest, and outrebounded Augsburg by a 35-33 margin.
Kristina Lurken * (SR, Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) scored eight points with seven rebounds, two assists and a steal for the Auggies, while Brietta Schluender (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored five points and Michelle Richter (JR, Chaska, Minn.) had four points and eight rebounds.
Danielle Frank had nine rebounds, three blocked shots and six points for the Blazers, while Judy Falvey scored nine points.
Both teams return to MIAC play on Wednesday (2/13), as Augsburg hosts St. Thomas at 7:30 p.m., and St. Benedict plays at Macalester at 5:45 p.m.
