Women's Soccer 8/30/08 -- Augsburg 1, Northwestern-Roseville 0
GAME BOXSCORE | AUGSBURG SEASON STATISTICS
MINNEAPOLIS (8/30/08) -- Gaby Hamerlinck (SO, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) put home a goal off a corner kick by Courtney Gamrath (FY, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) just two minutes into the game, and Augsburg College held on for a 1-0 nonconference women's soccer victory over Northwestern College-Roseville on Saturday evening at Augsburg's Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg outshot Northwestern by an 18-3 margin, and Augsburg goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) had to make just one save to pick up her second straight shutout to start the season, and her school-record 28th shutout of her career. DeGroot now has 29 career victories, just seven shy of the school's record of 35, set by Laura Hoffman (2000-03).
Katie Medd (SR, Mankato, Minn./East HS) added an assist on the goal for Hamerlinck.
"Although we struggled to finish chances tonight, you have to look at the positives. We got another victory and another shutout tonight after a physical game last night that left us shorthanded today," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "I was excited for Gaby. After missing all last year with a broken leg, she has shown tremendous courage and is really playing well. We were able to play all of our healthy field players tonight, in particular, I was proud of how Emily Sell (SO, White Bear Lake, Minn.) played in her first collegiate start."
Augsburg is now 2-0-0 on the season, with both victories coming by 1-0 shutouts. It was the first game of the season for Northwestern (0-1-0).
The Auggies dominated the run of play, controlling possession and keeping the ball in the Northwestern end for much of the game. But all but one of Augsburg's shots eluded the Northwestern goalkeepers. Rhonda Morgan (FY, Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS) started and collected three saves in the first half, while Tara Kubiszewski (FY, Andover, Minn./Meadow Creek Christian HS) claimed seven saves in the second half.
Medd had six shots to lead Augsburg, while Hamerlinck, Lacey Hoover (SO, Duluth, Minn./Central HS) and Lisa Weniger (FY, Eagan, Minn./School of Environmental Studies HS) had three shots each.
Any Green (JR, Cedar Falls, Iowa), Kyrie Jorgenson (SO, Decorah, Iowa) and JoBeth Dietz (SR, Pompano Beach, Fla./Westminster Academy HS) had Northwestern's shots.
Augsburg returns to action on Wednesday (9/3) at 5 p.m. with a nonconference game at Wisconsin-River Falls, the first of four straight road games for the Auggies. Northwestern also returns to action on Wednesday, with a 4 p.m. game at Division II Concordia-St. Paul.
"Now we have to get healthy quick and find a way to be successful on the road, as the next four games are away and three of those four teams were in the national tournament last year," Navarre said. "Overall, I'm excited for our team. We know we can play better and I know the players will continue to work hard to improve."
