MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/10/08) -- #D.J. Wendell# (JR, Princeton, Minn./Charles M. Russell (Mont.) HS) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season, and goalkeeper Pascaul Venter (JR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) scored his first shutout of the season and 14th of his career, as the Augsburg College men's soccer team opened Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 3-0 victory over host Concordia College-Moorhead on Wednesday afternoon at the Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex.
Ryan Sorensen (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) and Peter Loyd (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) added goals for the Auggies (3-0-1 overall, 1-0-0 MIAC), with Nick Anderson (JR, White Bear Lake, Minn.), Alex Hildebrandt (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) and Jake Lor (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS) adding assists.
"We had a hunch Sorensen would score tonight by the way he has been training. He did well to clean up a bit of a scrum in front of goal," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Peter Loyd has been great all year, and this isn't the last time you will read his name on the score line."
Augsburg outshot Concordia (3-2-0 overall, 0-1-0 MIAC) by an 11-4 margin in the game, including a 7-1 advantage in the first half. Mads Schmidt claimed four saves in goal for the Cobbers. Nine different Auggies had shots in the game.
"We were dangerous on set pieces today -- something I was worried we would struggle with this year after losing our giants to graduation," Holker said.
The Auggies opened the scoring in the 29th minute, when Sorensen scored his first goal of the season from six yards out off of a rebound. Anderson and Hildebrandt were credited with assists on Sorensen's goal. Eleven minutes later, Wendell scored an unassisted goal on a rebound off of Schmidt for his fourth goal of the season. A substitute in each of the Auggies' four games so far this season, Wendell has scored his four goals in just 175 minutes of play.
"D.J. continues to finish with incredible efficiency," Holker said. "Until his fitness comes around, he will see limited time. In his 30 minutes today, he netted one goal on one shot. It's been fun watching him go at this rate."
Loyd finished the scoring with his first collegiate goal, finishing a corner kick from Lor in the 55th minute.
Venter had to make just one save for the Auggies for his first shutout of the year.
Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Saturday (9/13) at 1 p.m., with a game at Hamline.
"Hamline cruised past Bethel on Wednesday, and (Hamline coach) Andy Coutts always has them organized and ready to go. If we can keep Drew Lukas off the scoreboard, we will be in a good position to get two points," Holker said.
