ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/13/08) -- Peter Loyd (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Alex Hildebrandt (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) scored goals in the first half, keeping the Augsburg College (4-0-1 overall, 2-0-0 MIAC) men's soccer team unbeaten on the season with a 2-1 victory over host Hamline University (3-4-0 overall, 1-1-0 MIAC) in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday at Pat Paterson Field.

After giving up a goal by Jason Werthmann following a corner kick in the 27th minute, Augsburg quickly tied the game just 1:43 later, as Loyd scored his second goal of the year, assisted by Ryan Sorensen (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS). Hildebrandt scored the eventual game-winner in the 41st minute, scoring off a corner kick by Jake Lor (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Central HS).

"We conceded a goal off a corner kick, and that is a source of concern for us this season," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "In the run of play, we had the ball most of the contest, but failed to finish Hamline off with our chances. Peter Loyd scored another important goal from a Sorensen free kick shortly after we went down, then Hildebrandt smashed home a corner kick to put us back in charge."

Goalkeeper Pascaul Venter (JR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) only had to make one save in the game in picking up the victory. Augsburg outshot Hamline by an 18-7 margin in the game.

Holker had compliments for several players, including newcomer Marcus Elmerskog (FY, Trondheim, Norway), who came in off the bench to play 42 minutes in the midfield in his first American collegiate soccer game.

"The introduction of Marcus Elmerskog was a pleasant one. He played good minutes and helped us protect the ball. Another week of training, and he will see a more important role in our team," Holker said. "Nick Anderson was good on the day. He held the ball well for us and allowed our team to get forward. Sorensen and David Scheller (FY, Maple Grove, Minn.) were really dangerous out wide. It was unfortunate we couldn't do their work justice with more goals."

Augsburg returns to MIAC play on Wednesday (9/17) at 4 p.m., with an important contest at St. Thomas.

"This was a win we needed to have, and now we have to lock down and be really sharp in training in preparation for one of the favorites to win the MIAC -- St. Thomas," Holker said. "They have dangerous players up top that always prove to be a handful for us."
