Augsburg drops MIAC-opener at Gustavus 3-1

ST. PETER, Minn. (9/17/08) -- Augsburg College opened its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball season with a road loss at Gustavus Adolphus College on Wednesday night at Gustavus' Gus Young Court. Game scores were 25-16, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21 in favor of the Gusties.

For the match, Augsburg (8-6 overall, 0-1 MIAC) was paced by the trio of Katie Christensen (SO, North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS), Laura Harms (SR, Little Falls, Minn.) and Julie Jenkins (SR, Edina, Minn.). Christensen led the team in kills with 13 while both Harms and Jenkins recorded kill-dig double-doubles on the evening. Harms recorded 11 kills and 15 digs, while Jenkins posted 10 kills and 11 digs.

Also playing well for the Auggies was setter Shanna Reed (JR, Eagan, Minn./Holy Angels HS), who recorded 40 assists and nine digs. Defensively, Augsburg was led by Dani Tanaka (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), who tallied 28 digs in the match.

Gustavus (11-1 overall, 1-0 MIAC) was led by Olivia Warren and Angela Ahrendt, who both recorded double-digit kills for the Gusties. Gustavus also had three players with more than four blocks and, as a team, out-blocked the Auggies by a 12.0 to 5.5 margin.

Augsburg returns to action this Saturday (9/20) at 11 a.m. with its alumni scrimmage at Si Melby Hall. The Auggies will return to MIAC action next Wednesday (9/24) at 7 p.m., when they travel to Northfield to take on Carleton College.
