ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/17/08) -- Derek Engler scored twice in an 11:31 span in the first half, lifting the University of St. Thomas to a 2-1 victory over visiting Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Wednesday afternoon at UST's South Field.

Alex Hildebrandt (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) scored Augsburg's (4-1-1 overall, 2-1-0 MIAC) lone goal of the game on a header in the 39th minute. Lucas Ingram (JR, Woodbury, Minn.) assisted on Hildebrandt's goal.

Engler scored from Mike Hutton in the 14th minute, and followed in the 26th minute with a goal from Andy Gikling for St. Thomas (7-0-0 overall, 3-0-0 MIAC).

"Peter Loyd (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Alex Hildebrandt did well to to keep their front-runners in check and win the battle in the boxes. The goals we conceded came from an unlikely source, but we need to be much better to not allow those shots to be taken at all," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Lucas Ingram was very good today. He improved as the game went on, and had his hands full with Mike Hutton. He has put together two very solid performances."

Augsburg was outshot by a 15-9 margin, with Pascaul Venter (JR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) collecting three saves for the Auggies. Carlos Castelan also had three saves in goal for the Tommies.

Augsburg has its alumni scrimmage on Saturday (9/20) at 1 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field, then hosts St. Olaf in an MIAC game on Tuesday (9/23) at 7:30 p.m., also at Edor Nelson Field.

"Overall, I think it was a good college soccer game," Holker said. "Our guys need to let the result roll off their shoulders and prepare for St. Olaf. If we take care of our business from here on out, we will be in a good position to realize our goals."
