WHITEWATER, Wis. (9/26/08) -- David Scheller (FY, Maple Grove, Minn.) scored the game-tying goal with 4:20 left to play in regulation, and goalkeeper Pascaul Venter (JR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) made a save on a penalty kick in overtime, as Augsburg College claimed a 1-1 tie in two overtimes with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in a nonconference men's soccer game on Friday afternoon at UWW's Fiskum Field.
Scheller scored the Auggies' lone goal in the 86th minute off assists from Peter Loyd (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong HS) and Lucas Ingram (JR, Woodbury, Minn.), leveling Augsburg's record at 5-1-2 overall.
"This was an entertaining soccer game; either team could have won," said Augsburg head coach Greg Holker. "Had we cleaned up our chances in regulation, Pascaul woudn't have had to make the save he did on Whitewater's penalty kick in overtime. However, that was the game's defining moment. We fought back to get level with five minutes in regulation on a scrappy goal off a free kick. Scheller finally got on the board after several chances. He was very good off the bench."
Wisconsin-Whitewater (4-3-2 overall) scored in the 70th minute, as Dan Montayne scored from Steve Nashleanas.
The Warhawks outshot Augsburg by a 15-14 margin in the game. Augsburg goalkeeper Venter collected eight saves, while Matt Gehn claimed seven saves for Wisconsin-Whitewater.
"I really like the character of this team. When we have trailed this season, we have always felt we would win. Circumstances have not deterred us and injuries have not stopped us. We are improving and learning more about each other each day," Holker said. "Simon Rekkebo (FY, Trondheim, Norway) was tremendous today as a substitute at right back. He hammered a ball from 45 yards out that was tipped away from the upper corner by Andrew Krueger shortly after he entered. Hildebrandt was as good as he expects -- he broke up Whitewater's attack and was dangerous when he got forward. Van Hong (SO, St. Louis Park, Minn.) brought good energy and effort in the late stages of the game. Overall, we were able to mix a lot of players around and see different combinations, and we liked what we saw."
Augsburg returns to action on Sunday (9/28) at 1 p.m., with a nonconference game at Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
