ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/27/08) -- Lisa Weniger (SO, Eagan, Minn./School of Environmental Studies HS) and Samantha Thompson (SO, White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored their first collegiate goals, and goalkeeper Maggie DeGroot (SR, Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West HS) collected four saves in goal for her seventh shutout of the season and school-record 33rd of her career, as Augsburg College claimed a 2-0 victory over the College of St. Catherine in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game on Saturday afternoon at St. Catherine.

Weniger scored an unassisted goal which deflected off of St. Catherine goalkeeper Kaylee Schmit and the post before going in the net in the 28th minute, and Thompson clinched the win with a goal off a corner kick by Kelsey Watsabaugh (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Hopkins HS) in the 78th minute. For both players, it was the first goals of their collegiate careers.

"Going into the game, we knew that it was going to be difficult and we talked about the importance of playing well and finishing our chances," said Augsburg head coach Mike Navarre. "I was proud of Sam. She came into the game and made an immediate impact, scoring a huge goal off a header to make it 2-0."

DeGroot picked up her 33rd career victory in goal, moving her closer to the Augsburg career record; Beth Petrik claimed 34 victories in her career (1995-98), while Laura Hoffman (2000-03) holds the career record with 35 wins in goal.

Augsburg outshot St. Catherine by a 16-12 margin. DeGroot claimed four saves in a winning effort, while Schmit had seven saves for the Wildcats.

The win broke a streak of two straight ties for the Auggies, who are now 6-1-3 overall, 2-0-3 in MIAC play. Augsburg will face St. Mary's next Saturday (10/4) at 5 p.m. at Edor Nelson Field.

"The team has been a little disappointed with our ties," Navarre said. "I know they are excited to get a win against a good team and look forward to our match against St. Mary's next Saturday."
