Women's Hockey 1/17/09 -- St. Benedict 3, Augsburg 0
MINNEAPOLIS (1/17/09) -- The line of Gretchen Leyendecker (SO, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS), Holly Reinking (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Elk River HS) and Patty King (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) accounted for all the scoring on Saturday, as the College of St. Benedict completed a series sweep with a 3-0 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey game at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Leyendecker and Reinking had a goal and two assists apiece, while King had a goal and an assist for the Blazers (6-4-0 overall, 4-4-0 MIAC).
Tiffany Magnuson (SR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame HS) led Augsburg (3-12-0 overall, 0-8-0 MIAC) with five shots on goal, while Sara Toft (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) had four shots and Erin Leyden (SO, Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South HS) and Kali Holst (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) had three shots apiece.
St. Benedict outshot the Auggies by a 17-3 margin in the second period, en route to a 32-22 advantage in the game. The Blazers scored twice in the second period, including once on the power play. King scored on the power play at the 6:22 mark, followed by Leyendecker's even-strength goal at the 15:25 mark. Reinking scored at the 5:44 mark of the third period to complete the scoring.
Augsburg goalie Toni Menth (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) had 29 saves, while Abbie Helminen (SO, Brighton, Mich.) had 22 saves for the Blazers.
Augsburg will face Gustavus in an MIAC series next Friday and Saturday (1/23-24), while St. Benedict will face St. Catherine in a series next Friday and Saturday.
