Auggies drop 8-4 decision at Gustavus.

Men's Hockey 1/24/09 -- Gustavus 8, Augsburg 4

ST. PETER, Minn. (1/24/09) -- Jim Jensen (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS), John Lennartson (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) and Chris Johnson (JR, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) had a goal and assist each for Augsburg College, but it wasn't enough as the Auggies dropped an 8-4 decision to host Gustavus Adolphus College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday night at the Gustavus Don Roberts Ice Rink.

David Martinson, the MIAC's leading goal- and point-scorer, scored two goals and an assist to lead Gustavus (12-7-0 overall, 7-3-0 MIAC). Martinson now has 22 goals and 30 points on the season. Brad Wieck had a goal with two assists, and Eric Bigham, James Leathers, Casey Dynan and Patrick Dynan had a goal and assist apiece.

Cory Ellertson (SO, Albert Lea, Minn.) scored a goal for Augsburg (3-14-0 overall, 2-6-0 MIAC), with Ben Roberts (SO, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS), Nick Streine (FY, Stillwater, Minn.) and Mario Mjelleli (SO, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) adding assists.

The Gusties, who outshot the Auggies by a 31-25 margin, built a 4-2 lead after one period and a 7-3 lead after two periods. Andrew Kent (SR, Lakeville, Minn.) stopped 16 shots in two periods of work for Augsburg, and Auggie goalies Kevin Drakulic (FY, Plymouth, Minn./Totino-Grace HS) and Jon Zitur (FY, Buffalo, Minn.) split time in goal in the third period, both making their first collegiate appearances. Drakulic had three saves and Zitur had four saves. Matt Lopes collected 19 saves for the win for the Gusties, with Jake Swansson recording two saves in relief.

Both teams return to MIAC play with series next Friday and Saturday (1/30-31). Augsburg hosts Concordia-Moorhead in a two-game set at the Augsburg Ice Arena, while Gustavus will face St. John's.
