No. 2-ranked Gustavus tops Augsburg 9-1.

MINNEAPOLIS (1/24/09) -- With 13 different players figuring in the scoring, the No. 2-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College women's hockey team claimed a 9-1 victory over host Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest on Saturday night at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Kathryn DelZoppo (FY, Alexandria, Minn.) scored two goals and had an assist for a three-point night for the Gusties (11-1-3 overall, 8-0-2 MIAC), ranked No. 2 in the latest U.S. College Hockey Online Division III national rankings. Whitney Schaff (FY, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) also had a three-point night with one goal and two assists, and Gina DeNucci (FY, Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka HS) contributed three assists. Melissa Mackley (JR, Burnsville, Minn.), Laura Hillman (JR, Albert Lea, Minn.) and Jenny Pusch (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels HS) had a goal and assist apiece.

Augsburg's (3-14-0 overall, 0-10-0 MIAC) lone goal came from Carly Facchini (SO, Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS), who scored an unassisted goal midway through the third period. Jenna Knudtson (SO, Austin, Minn.) had three shots for the Auggies, while Tiffany Magnuson (SR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) had two shots.

The Gusties had a 4-1 lead after Facchini's goal for the Auggies, then scored five goals in the final 7:17 of play. Gustavus outshot Augsburg by a 51-9 margin in the game. Augsburg goalie Toni Menth (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) collected 42 saves, while Gustavus' Emily Klatt (FY, Woodbury, Minn.) had seven saves and Osa Donovan (FY, Portland, N.D./May-Port CG HS) had one save in 4:30 of relief at the end of the game.

Augsburg has a two-game MIAC series next Friday and Saturday (1/30-31) at Concordia-Moorhead. Gustavus has a series against St. Benedict next weekend.
