Men's Hockey 1/3/09 -- Oswego State (N.Y.) 5, Augsburg 2
OSWEGO, N.Y. (1/3/09) -- Andrew Mather scored two goals to lead the No. 11-ranked State University of New York-Oswego men's hockey team to the championship in its Pathfinder Bank/Oswego Hockey Classic, claiming a 5-2 victory over visiting Augsburg College on Saturday night at the Campus Center Arena.
Nick Guran (FY, McHenry, Ill.) scored two power-play goals in a 1:08 span in the third period, and Trevor Doden (FY, Red Wing, Minn.) had two assists for Augsburg (3-8-0 overall), which outshot Oswego State (10-5-1) by a 28-27 margin.
The Lakers built a 4-0 lead after two periods, behind two goals by Mather and goals by Garren Reisweber and Matt Whitehead. Mark Lozzi capped the scoring for the Lakers 30 seconds into the third period.
Guran scored on the power play from Doden and Chris Johnson (JR, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) at the 7:39 mark of the third period, followed 68 seconds later by his second power-play goal of the night, from Doden and Joel Sauer (SO, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS).
With two goals and three assists on the weekend, Johnson was named to the six-player All-Tournament Team.
Augsburg goalie Andrew Kent (SR, Lakeville, Minn.) claimed 22 saves in goal, while Oswego State goalie Tim Potter had 26 saves.
Augsburg returns home for two nonconference games at the Augsburg Ice Arena next weekend, hosting Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Friday (1/9) at 7 p.m. and Wisconsin-Eau Claire next Saturday (1/10) at 7 p.m.
