Women's Hockey 1/8/09 -- Augsburg 4, Finlandia (Mich.) 3 (OT)
HANCOCK, Mich. (1/8/09) -- Jenna Knudtson (SO, Austin, Minn.) scored the game-winning goal 1:08 into overtime, giving Augsburg College its second straight victory and a sweep of host Finlandia University in a midweek nonconference women's hockey series, a 4-3 overtime decision on Thursday night at the Houghton County Arena.
Alison Ulseth (FY, Orono, Minn.) scored her first two collegiate goals for Augsburg (2-10-0 overall), including the game-tying goal on an unassisted marker with 2:31 left in regulation. Knudtson gave the Auggies the win with her goal from Andrea Toft (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) 68 seconds into the extra session.
Katelyn McLean scored two goals for Finlandia (0-11-0 overall), with Amy Danielson scoring the other goal for the Lions to give them the lead late in the second period.
Kali Holst (FY, Mound, Minn./Mound-Westonka HS) scored her fourth goal of the series, and her team-high eighth goal of the season, with a tally from Toft 32 seconds into the second period for the Auggies. The Lions took the lead with two goals in the second period, setting the stage for Ulseth's third-period tying goal and Knudtson's winning goal in the extra session.
Finlandia outshot Augsburg by a 34-25 margin, but Augsburg goalie Toni Menth (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) claimed the win with a 34-save effort. Finlandia goalie Katie Herron had 21 saves.
Augsburg returns to action with a home nonconference game against Plymouth State (N.H.) on Saturday (1/10) at 2 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
