WINONA, Minn. --
Alex Hildebrandt (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park HS) and
Van Hong (JR, St. Louis Park, Minn.) scored goals for Augsburg College, as the Auggies claimed a 2-0 win over St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer game on Tuesday evening at SMU's Ochrymowycz Field.
Hildebrandt scored his fourth goal of the season from
Chad Gilmer (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) in the 12th minute, and Hong scored his second goal of the year off a cross from
Peter Osborn (SO, Eagan, Minn./Eastview HS) in the 77th minute for the Auggies (8-7-1 overall, 3-6-0 MIAC), who won their third straight game. Hildebrandt's goal came on a rebound off a shot by Bowman, while Hong headed in a free kick from Osborn.
"Hilde pounded home a rebound off a great ball from
Chad Gilmer," said Augsburg head coach
Greg Holker. "
Matt Bowman (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) is becoming a real threat on the ball as his fitness progresses from last year's surgery. He is peaking in this season right now, but it looks like he is just getting started overall."
Pascaul Venter (SR, Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS) recorded three saves in goal to earn his fifth shutout of the season and school-record 27th of his career.
"
Chad Gilmer (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) did well for us tonight, as he has all season long. I also thought Operlim Marcellino (FY, Rochester, Minn./Century HS) looked much more confident on the ball and got a little more involved in this game. He has loads of potential," Holker said. "
Mac Miller (SR, Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) has become our team warrior lately, as just he and Pascaul went the full 90. Mac has played almost every minute of our last three varsity games, and every minute of our last two reserve team matches. His command has really allowed us to try some other players in different spots and get some of our younger guys acclimated to MIAC soccer."
Augsburg outshot St. Mary's (6-9-2 overall, 1-7-1 MIAC) by a 16-9 margin, including an 11-5 advantage in the first half. Jon Szafranski had 11 saves in goal for the Cardinals. Augsburg also had 13 corner kicks to St. Mary's three in the contest.
"In the early part of the game, we looked like we were going to score five or six, but Szafranski kept us out," Holker said. "He has been the backbone of that program for the last four years and was certainly on his game tonight."
Augsburg was able to get plenty of players valuable playing time in the MIAC, as 21 Auggies saw action in the contest.
The Auggies close their 2009 campaign on Saturday (10/31) at 1 p.m., with a game at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter, Minn.
"With the mess that is the MIAC right now, Saturday's game in St. Peter will have a playoff feel to it. Gustavus must win to have a chance at a playoff spot," Holker said.
