BLOOMINGTON, Minn. --
Chris Johnson (SR, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) had a goal and two assists, while
Joel Sauer (JR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) and
Nikki Holt (JR, Hermantown, Minn.) had a goal and assist apiece, as the Augsburg College men's hockey team opened its season with a 4-0 win over Bethel University in the opening game of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Showcase on Friday afternoon at the Bloomington Ice Garden.
Playing in his first collegiate game,
Justin Lochner (FY, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) collected 34 saves in goal for the shutout for the Auggies (1-0 overall).
Trevor Doden (SO, Red Wing, Minn.) also scored for the Auggies, and
Tyler Antony (SR, Buffalo, Minn.) had two assists in the game.
Sauer opened the scoring with a power-play goal from Johnson and
David Hines (SO, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) at the 6:14 mark of the first period.
Johnson scored for the Auggies at the 11:22 mark of the second period, assisted by Holt and Antony, and Holt put the Auggies up 3-0 with 39 seconds left in the second frame, assisted by Antony. Doden closed the scoring with a goal from Johnson and Sauer at the 12:21 mark of the third period.
Bethel outshot Augsburg by a 34-32 margin. Aaron Damjanovich had 28 saves in goal for the Royals.
Augsburg went 1-for-4 on the power play in the game, while holding Bethel scoreless on its eight power-play opportunities.
The Auggies return to action at the MIAC Showcase on Sunday (11/1), facing Gustavus at 5 p.m. at the Bloomington Ice Garden.
