Auggies top national runner-up 5-3

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Nick Guran (SO, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) scored two goals and added two assists for a four-point night, leading the Augsburg College men's hockey team to a 5-3 victory over defending national runner-up Gustavus Adolphus College at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Showcase on Sunday afternoon at the Bloomington Ice Garden.

Joel Sauer (JR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) had a goal and two assists, while Jim Jensen (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) had three assists for Augsburg (2-0-0 overall), with David Hines (SO, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) and Trevor Doden (SO, Red Wing, Minn.) also scoring.

David Martinson had a goal and assist for Gustavus (1-1-0 overall).

Making his collegiate debut in goal, Augsburg's Nate Pellegrino (FY, Woodlyn, Pa./Lawrence Central HS) claimed 29 saves to pick up the victory. Augsburg outshot Gustavus by a 34-32 margin in the game, with Jake Swanson collecting 29 saves for the Gusties.

Guran scored two goals in the first 13:59 of play, part of an Auggie attack that built a 4-1 lead midway through the second period. Jensen and Mario Mjelleli (JR, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) assisted on both of Guran's goals.

After giving up a shorthanded goal late in the first period by the Gusties' Patrick Dynan, the Auggies struck again with two goals in the first 11:32 of the second period, as Hines scored from Jensen and Sauer, and Doden scored from Guran and Sauer.

Sauer capped the scoring for the Auggies with a power-play goal from Guran and Kris Reinthaler (FY, Graz, Austria/Spring Creek Academy (Texas) HS) late in the second period.

Augsburg has two nonconference games on the road next weekend, playing at Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Friday (11/6) at 7 p.m. and at Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday (11/7) at 7 p.m.
