Auggies sweep Concordia-Wisconsin

MINNEAPOLIS -- Chris Johnson (SR, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS) scored two goals and added an assist, leading Augsburg College to a 4-1 victory over Concordia University-Wisconsin in a nonconference men's hockey game on Saturday afternoon at the Augsburg Ice Arena.

Joel Sauer (JR, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) had two assists for Augsburg (4-3-1), which swept Concordia (0-9-0) in the weekend series. Tyler Antony (SR, Buffalo, Minn.) and Trevor Doden (SO, Red Wing, Minn.) also scored for the Auggies.

In the process, Augsburg head coach Chris Brown picked up his 100th career coaching victory. In his ninth season as a head coach, Brown is now 100-102-16; in four years at Augsburg, he is now 31-46-8.

Augsburg dominated play in Saturday's game, with a 54-23 shots-on-goal advantage, including a 21-8 advantage in the first period, as Augsburg built a 2-0 lead. Antony opened the scoring with a goal from Jim Jensen (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) and David Hines (SO, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) at the 4:24 mark, and Johnson followed with an unassisted goal off a face off at the 9:00 mark.

Johnson scored his second goal of the game at the 16:18 mark of the third period, on assists from Sauer and Landon Olson (FY, Alexandria, Minn./Duluth Marshall HS), who picked up his first collegiate point.

The Falcons cut into the lead with a power-play goal from Joseph Greg Douglas (FY, Plano, Texas/Cosmo Clark HS), assisted by Eric Domaas (JR, Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS) and Jari Sanders (JR, Cape Coral, Fla.) late in the second period. But Augsburg secured the win early in the third period, as Doden scored on the power play from Johnson and Sauer.

Augsburg goalie Jon Zitur (SO, Buffalo, Minn.) claimed 22 saves to score the win, while Michael Wyenn (JR, Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS) had 50 saves in a losing effort for the Falcons.

Augsburg returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play after the Thanksgiving break, facing St. John's in a series Dec. 4 and 5.
