MINNEAPOLIS -- Scoring two goals on the power play, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point claimed a 2-0 victory over host Augsburg College in a nonconference women's hockey game on Friday evening at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
Toni Menth (SR, Buffalo, Minn.) claimed 39 saves in goal for Augsburg (0-1-0 overall), which was outshot 41-12 in its season-opening game.
Tracy Butler (SR, Marshfield, Wis.) and Michelle Lunneborg (FY, Richfield, Minn.) scored power-play goals for Wisconsin-Stevens Point (2-1-0 overall), which went 2-for-6 on the power play. Meanwhile, Augsburg was held scoreless in its six power-play opportunities.
The Pointers dominated the first two periods, outshooting the Auggies 34-9 through the first 40 minutes of play. But Augsburg held its own with the Pointers in the third period, despite giving up a power-play goal.
Whitney Restemayer (SR, Bemidji, Minn.) had four shots-on-goal for the Auggies in the game. Ann Hulme (SR, Shaker Heights, Ohio/Phillips Exeter (N.H.) HS) stopped all 12 shots she faced in goal for the Pointers to claim the shutout.
Both teams return to nonconference play on Saturday (11/7), as Augsburg plays at Wisconsin-River Falls at 2:05 p.m., and Wisconsin-Stevens Point plays at Bethel at 2:30 p.m.
