Augsburg falls to Hamline in MIAC opener

MINNEAPOLIS -- Despite career-high scoring performances from Ashley Erickson (SO, Bemidji, Minn.) and Lexi Thompson (SO, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS), the Auggies were not able to keep up with the hot-shooting Pipers, as they fell 94-76 on Wednesday night in MIAC action at Si Melby Hall.

Augsburg (0-1 overall, 0-0 MIAC) was led by Erickson and Thompson, who scored 15 points apiece. Erickson was a career-high 3-for-5 from behind the arc, while Thompson finished 5-for-10 from the floor and added four offensive rebounds. Also finishing in double figures for the Auggies was Shannon Renne (JR, Nicollet, Minn.) and Serenae Levine (SO, Eden Prairie, Minn.), who each had 11 points on the night. Levine also led Augsburg with seven rebounds and eight assists.

Hamline (2-0 overall, 1-0 MIAC) was led by the duo of Mary Wilkowski and Kara Poirier. Wilkowski posted a game-high 32 points and 10 rebounds, on an impressive 13-for-16 effort from the floor, while Poirier claimed a 19 point effort on 7-for-9 shooting. Teammate Jackie Kelly posted a game-high nine assists.

The Auggies played well to start the contest, claiming their largest lead of the evening, a 17-9 advantage off a layup by Thompson at the 14:28 mark. The Pipers rallied to tie things up at 22-22 off a three-pointer by Poirier with 11:22 left in the half. Hamline grabbed the lead at 30-29 with just under eight minutes remaining in the half and proceeded to go on a 16-5 run to close the opening frame.

In the second half, Augsburg just wasn't able to close the gap as the Pipers connected on 63 percent (17-of-27) from the floor and hung on for the 94-76 win over the Auggies.

For the game, Augsburg shot 34.7 percent (25-of-72) from the field, while the Pipers connected on 60.0 percent (36-of-60). Hamline held a narrow 38-37 advantage on the boards, while turnovers were even at 19 apiece.

Augsburg and Hamline both return to action on Saturday (12/5). Augsburg plays host to St. Catherine University at Si Melby Hall, while Hamline hosts Macalester in MIAC action.
