ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The forward line of
Mario Mjelleli (JR, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS),
Nick Guran (SO, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) and
Jim Jensen (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) figured in the scoring on all three Augsburg College goals, as the Auggies claimed a 3-2 win over host St. John's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Friday night at the National Hockey Center.
Each of the three forwards had a goal and assist on the night for the Auggies. Augsburg (5-3-1 overall, 1-1-1 MIAC) has won its last three games, and is unbeaten (3-0-1) in its last four contests.
Karl Gilbert scored both goals for St. John's (4-6-1 overall, 1-4-0 MIAC), which was outshot by a 36-27 margin by the Auggies.
Guran opened the scoring for the Auggies with a goal at the 5:30 mark of the first period, assisted by
David Hines (SO, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) and
Bryan Frischmann (JR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS). After Gilbert tied the game at the 14:20 mark of the opening frame on the power play from Brent Brodersen and Grant Ellena, the Auggies took the lead back just 1:38 later, as Mjelleli scored from Jensen and Guran.
Jensen scored a power-play goal, the eventual game-winner, at the 13:49 mark of the second period from
Kris Reinthaler (FY, Graz, Austria/Spring Creek Academy (Texas) HS) and Mjelleli. Gilbert scored a goal for the Johnnies midway through the third period, assisted by Chris Murray and Gabriel Harren.
Augsburg goalie
Justin Lochner (FY, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) improved to 3-1-1 on the season with a 25-save effort in goal. Tony Civello had 33 saves in goal for the Johnnies.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (12/5) at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
