MINNEAPOLIS -- Despite a perfect 4-for-4 performance from behind the arc in the first half by
Ben Flavin (JR, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville North HS), St. Thomas snapped Augsburg's four-game season opening win streak with a 77-61 victory at Si Melby Hall.
Augsburg (4-1 overall, 1-1 MIAC) was led the three players in double-figures. Flavin led the Auggies with 14 points, all of which he recorded in the first half.
Brett Sorenson (SO, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) and
Jon Cassens (SR, Prior Lake, Minn.) each finished with 13 points, while
Marcus Brumm (FY, Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville South HS) posted a team-high five rebounds.
St. Thomas (6-0 overall, 3-0 MIAC) was led by Joe Scott who finished with 21 points and five rebounds on a 5-for-8 shooting performance from three-point range. Also finishing in double-figure for the Tommies were Sam Eicher with 14 points and Alex Healy with 10 points and six rebounds.
The opening minutes of the game were very back-and-forth with a quick paced tempo. The Auggies and Tommies were notched at 11-11 at the 11:58 mark, thanks in part to a pair of 3-pointers by Flavin. St. Thomas mounted a 10-0 run before the Auggies could regroup and cut the Tommie lead back down to six. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half as St. Thomas headed to the locker room with a 38-27 lead at the half.
Augsburg made it interesting as it cut the Tommie lead down to 55-53 off a tip-in by Brumm at the 9:57 mark and held the Tommies within three for the next two minutes. St. Thomas turned up the defensive pressure and with on a 19-5 run to end the game and claim a 77-61 win over the previously unbeaten Auggies.
For the game, Augsburg shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the field, while the Tommies connected on 50.0 percent (29-of-58). St. Thomas claimed a narrow 34-30 advantage on the boards and outscored the Augsburg bench 27-11.
Augsburg and St. Thomas both return to action on Wednesday with the Auggies hosting Gustavus, while St. Thomas hosts St. Mary's University.
