Women's Hockey 2/13/09 -- Augsburg 4, St. Mary's 2
WINONA, Minn. (2/13/09) -- Sara Toft (JR, Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) scord a goal and added an assist for a two-point night, and goalie Toni Menth (JR, Buffalo, Minn.) stopped 41 saves for the victory, as Augsburg College scored a 4-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey win over host St. Mary's University on Friday night at the SMU Ice Arena.
Toft's goal was the second in a three-goal second period, giving Augsburg (5-17-0 overall, 2-13-0) the lead for good over St. Mary's (6-13-1 overall, 5-9-1 MIAC). Erin Leyden (SO, Robbinsdale, Minn./Cooper HS), Jenna Knudtson (SO, Austin, Minn.) and Tiffany Magnuson (SR, Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy HS) had the other Augsburg goals.
Magnuson's goal was her fifth of the season and 61st of her 95-game career. Magnuson stands seven goals away from tying Augsburg's career record for goals, 68, set by Angie Rieger (1998-2001). Magnuson now has 93 career points (61 goals, 32 assists) and stands in third place in school history in total points; the record, 137, was set by Lauren Chezick (2002-05).
Menth's 41 saves marked the seventh time this season she has recorded more than 40 saves in a game, and the 11th time she has recorded 30-plus saves. St. Mary's outshot Augsburg by a 43-26 margin in the game, including a 17-6 edge in the third period.
Jamie Henneman and Katie Cachey scored goals for St. Mary's. Madeline Lenz had 22 saves in goal for the Cardinals.
Leyden put the Auggies on the board with an unassisted goal at the 3:42 mark of the first period, and after St. Mary's tied the game later in the frame, the Auggies scored three goals in the second period. Knudtson scored from Whitney Pratt (SO, Mitchell, S.D.) at the 4:48 mark, Toft scored from Brya Erickson (SO, New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) at the 10:52 mark on the power play, and Magnuson scored a power-play goal from Toft and Erickson at the 14:27 mark.
The teams complete the MIAC series on Saturday (2/14) at 7:05 p.m. at the Augsburg Ice Arena.
