Augsburg claims third straight series sweep, 9-3 over St. Mary's!

WINONA, Minn. (2/14/09) -- For the second straight night, Jim Jensen (SO, Plymouth, Minn./Osseo HS) and Nick Guran (FY, McHenry, Ill./McHenry East HS) scored two goals apiece, as Augsburg College claimed its sixth straight victory with a 9-3 triumph over host St. Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's hockey game on Saturday night at the SMU Ice Arena.

Eleven different Augsburg (9-14-0 overall, 8-6-0 MIAC) players figured in the scoring, including Chris Johnson (JR, Verona, Wis./Madison Memorial HS), who had a goal and four assists for a five-point night. Guran added two assists to his two-goal effort for a four-point night, and Jensen, Mario Mjelleli (SO, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) and Joel Sauer (SO, Madison, Wis./Memorial HS) had three-point nights apiece.

With the win, Augsburg remains in a tie for fourth place in the MIAC standings with Hamline (8-6-0 MIAC), which topped St. John's 4-1 on Saturday. With 16 points, Augsburg and Hamline are two points ahead of Bethel (7-7-0 MIAC), which was idle this weekend, and just two points behind both St. Thomas (8-4-2 MIAC) and Gustavus (9-5-0 MIAC), tied for second place in the league standings with 18 points.

Augsburg scored four goals in each of the first two periods to build a commanding lead over the Cardinals. Jensen scored twice in the first period, with John Lennartson (FY, Burnsville, Minn.) and Trevor Doden (FY, Red Wing, Minn.) also scoring.

David Hines (FY, Sartell, Minn./St. Cloud Tech HS) scored early in the second period, and Johnson started a three-goal Augsburg outburst in a 2:21 span at the 14:26 mark, followed by two goals by Guran. Mario Mjelleli (SO, Faribault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) capped the scoring for the Auggies with a goal in the third period.

Tony Clafton (JR, Grand Rapids, Minn.), Mike Glaesmer (SO, Traverse City, Mich.) and Matt Staehely (JR, Shorewood, Ill.) scored goals for St. Mary's.

Augsburg outshot St. Mary's by a 43-38 margin, with Andrew Kent (SR, Lakeville, Minn.) collecting 35 saves in goal for the win.
